The menu for the cafe was developed around healthy foods in the form of guilt free snackable using fresh organic produce and sustainable practices of cooking and serving. These concepts of healthy food, organic produce, and sustainable processes were used by us as a starting point to inform the initial design brief. The design needed to be contemporary and timeless but, the details needed to be fresh. The client also wanted the space to be an extension of her spunky, entrepreneurial spirit a testament of sort for women in business. The scope for us at Designsmith included the complete design package, execution, and loose furniture.
The design is dominated by clean lines intercepted with subtle curves to guide the circulation of the space. Majority of the materials used are natural finishes in subdued colour palates, this allows the wall graphics and decorative lighting to pop. One of the central design features we developed was the hanging system above the counter with a glow halo, this system also doubles up as a storage for their homegrown pickling and margination process, helping the jars settle and give the fresh organic vibe.
Similarly, other design elements such as the sliding panels on the back wall cabinets that double up as menu boards, and special furniture like the entrance library staircase and all the seating and custom steel finished counter spaces were designed and produced inhouse to complement the rustic nature of the food in the displays. The space between the outside seating and the indoor seating is blurred using bifold doors, adding to the inviting nature of the space.
Great things are achieved through collaborative effort and on this project, we got the chance to work with some of the best practices in the industry. Al Halabi worked very closely with us at Designsmith to develop the space planning and details for the kitchen. Another notable collaboration was with artist Sijin Gopinathan, brought on board by the client to depict her fun and high-spirited nature. We developed various iterations with the client for the brand and interiors artwork, and he executed the graphics for the walls that gives the place its peppy vibe to perfection.
These days social medias have a far-reaching influence on all businesses especially in the food and beverage industry. To leverage this impact and to embed something truly characteristic of the client’s persona, we custom designed a circular swing seating as our ‘Instagram nook’. This seating along with the graphics and the lighting in the background truly captures the ‘bo(w)ld’ ness of their culinary aesthetic and our design ideology. This ideology is extended to all the elements of this 1050 sq ft café with indoor and outdoor seating options.
