What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui, meaning "wind and water," is based on the principle that the flow of energy, or chi, is dictated by the arrangement of objects, consequently affecting the occupants' well-being. By applying Feng Shui principles to your home layout, you can cultivate a space that promotes vitality, tranquillity, and overall harmony.

Here are some interior design tips for key areas in your home that can boost your health and happiness:

Start with the entrance

In Chinese culture, there exists a belief that "wealth does not enter through a dirty door." Consequently, it is imperative to maintain cleanliness and illumination in the entranceway to prevent the accumulation of debris. A foyer adorned with auspicious embellishments such as gold ingots or crystal trees, which are believed to draw prosperity and auspicious energies into the household are also a great addition.

Onto the living room

Ideally, positioning your couch against a solid wall is recommended, symbolising the solidity, strength and support. In instances where placing the sofa against a wall isn't feasible, it's essential to ensure it does not directly face a door or obstruct hallways. The placement should prioritise an open and unobstructed feel within the room, allowing qi to flow freely. Sofa so good!

Cooking up pure happiness

A symbol of fire, the kitchen is more often than not the heart of the home. Undeniably a vital element for life, an excess of it evokes aggression and conflict. Hence, open kitchen layouts are not recommended as per Feng Shui principles as they facilitate the uncontrolled spread of fire energy throughout the home. Another pro-tip is to steer clear of intensely dark colours such as red, black and opt for more subdued hues that maintain balance and harmony in the kitchen.

Your own peace haven

Your sanctuary for rest and rejuvenation is largely responsible for your physical and mental wellbeing. Ideally, your bed should be oriented to face the room's entrance, against a wall, similar to the couch in your living room. Placing the bed directly adjacent to a window should also be avoided to prevent the dispersion of positive energy. Avoid beams positioned above the bed, as they can potentially direct negative energy downward, impacting individuals adversely.
